Scared ya, didn't I? Yeah, okay, probably not.
Still sworn to silence over exciting things, but I don't want my blog to become a Dead Zone in the mean time. So, instead of inundating you with more recipes (although I realize that I still owe you 2 RTWCYL(NSTW), I thought I'd actually talk about bookish, writerly stuff today, namely the newest WIP banging around in my little brain. I wanted to take a break from writing the sequel to The Book Formerly Known as Demonglass- changing it again!- because I'm still not totally sure about where I want to go with it. I'd initially planned on Sophie and some of the other characters going to England for...um... some stuff that I can't talk about without totally ruining both the first AND second books for you. But now I'm kind of attached to the idea of keeping them in the South (or, as me and my friend Amber like to say, The Dirty Souf.) One of my ideas in starting this whole series was to do a Southern Gothic thing for the YA crowd, so moving the whole kit and kaboodle across the pond sosrt of defeats that purpose.
So while I'm pondering this (and Sophie is pissed about the delay, let me tell you. She's like, "Okay, Writer Chick, you promised that I could make out with two guys in the second book. Two. Who cares if they're in England or Georgia? Holy hell weasel, woman, just write!" Sophie is not patient, especially when it comes to kissing scenes), I've started work on a new thing that hasn't really taken shape yet, but would involve several kids, multiple perspectives, and a haunted house in Mississippi. I'm also kind of feeling 3rd person POV for thid one, which is weird as usually writing in 3rd person POV feels unnatural to me. I don't like writing from a "distance" as it were. I've heard other people say that 1st person POV weirds them out like whoa, so who knows?
I think a haunted house story could be a lot of fun to write. I loathe gore, but genuine spooky stuff? LOVE. My favorite ghost story is Henry James's The Turn of the Screw, because holy hot damn is it freaky. And on multiple levels. It can be a little difficult to read (I used to have to read it aloud when I taught Great Books, and it was ROUGH. Really, really long sentences) but read it. It's worth it. Favorite spooky movie? Probably The Others, as it as creepy and very similar to The Turn of the Screw, ha ha! I'm also one of the few people I know who loved, loved, loved The Blair Witch Project. Just thinking about the end makes me shudder. In fact, when my husband goes camping, I threaten to leave those f'ed up little twig figures hidden in his sleeping bag. And then he threatens to divorce me. Good times.

blair witch project is the greatest horror movie ever made. the ending still freaks me out
and im a fan of "haunter of the dark" and "the shadow out of innsmouth" by muh boi, h.p. lovecraft. they've got that creepy corrupted church vibe going for 'em, and some absolutely bitchass endings.
I'm going to have to go with The Exorcist. I still cannot watch this movie. It scares the living shit out of me.
That and The Others are my top scary movies.
There's a great film from the early sixties called the Haunting. It is based on Shirley Jackson's novel of the same name. She also wrote the Lottery, the famous short story.
It's a creepy film.
A few of my fave scary films are the Others, Don't Look Now, Rosemary's Baby,the Exorcist,The original Omen terrified me a a child, Open Water (low budget shark movie) blah, I could go on...
Have you ever seen the Innocents? It's based on the Turn of the Screw.
