My Motto

HA! You suckers thought I wasn't going to blog tonight, didn't you? Well, HA! I say. HAAA! Because here I am, all blogging and stuff at 9:30 at night. Okay, so when I was doing the School Visits of Awesome last week, I had one of those things happen where a kid asked a question SO GREAT that I totally blanked on answering it. And I told her I'd think about it, and blog the answer once I'd come up with something. So this is me, fulfilling that vow!

The question was: Is there a motto you live by?

Right away, you see that this is a freakin' cool question. And I DO have mottoes, lots of 'em! The problem is... well, most of them are from my dad, and he was, um, a SAILOR, so they're not exactly suitable for sharing with 7-12th graders. (They are however, Brilliant And Amazing, like, "Just sit back until you know who all the a-holes are," and "Don't mean sh*t to a tree." I seriously use at least one of those every week.)

As is always the way with these things, an answer occurred to me just a few hours later. There's a magnet I have on my fridge that I read every single day. As far as mottoes go, it's a long one. Still, I think it's the best "this is what I try to live by" statement I could find. Girl Who Asked Great, Yet Stumping Question, this one is for you!

“To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”
~~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Mine would be "Whatever you do, do it with gumption and flair!"

(Congratz on the author photo btw -via twitter- I remember how stoked I was when I did my first one... also by a family member, also pretty much in the yard...)

AHH! I'm that girl and you should know it's ridiculously exciting to be mentioned on a stellar author's blog! I discovered my "motto" (*cough* Bible verse, aka goody-goody-give-away) to live by. "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity." 1 Timothy 4:1

I think I would never comprehend. It seems too complicated and extremely broad for me.
