Is it just me, or does FAQ sound kind of...well...rude when you say it out loud? Probably just me. My mind lives in The Gutter Zone. ;-)
Okay, so I'm FINALLY tackling some FAQ I've been getting via email/at signings/from my friends, etc. Eventually, I'll get this up on the website, but for now, here are some answers to any and all burning questions!
1) WHEN IS HEX HALL 2: HEXLECTRIC BOOGALOO COMING OUT?/HOW MANY BOOKS ARE IN THE HEX HALL SERIES?
Right now, HEX HALL 2: HEX AND THE CITY (can you tell we STILL don't have a title?) is scheduled to be released on March 1, 2011. This is not 100% set in stone, but I doubt it will come out any earlier than this. Yes, I realize that's a long time from now, but I PROMISE (well, hope) the wait is worth it! HEX HALL 3: TRIPLE HEXXX (still not real title. I asked. They said no.)will be out in 2012. So far, Disney-Hyperion has bought 3 Hex Hall books. Will there be more? Perhaps! I really plan on wrapping up Sophie's story in Book 3, but I'd love a chance to play in that universe again. We'll see!
2) WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR IDEAS?
Anywhere and everywhere. I've talked about this a lot with my other Author Friends, and we've all come to the same conclusion: We've always made up stories, and have no idea what other people do with their free time. :) Very rarely does an idea come to me completely formed; usually, I hear/read/think something that kind of sticks in my brain. Then, weeks, sometimes months later, I hear/read/think something else, and it gels with that original idea in such a way that the very beginnings of a book are formed. HEX HALL came from a life-long love of Creepy House Movies+ a deep love for Anne Rice's THE WITCHING HOUR+ a tiny does of "Pan's Labyrinth." My current WIP sprung from being an "X-Files" fan+ watching "The Last Starfighter" with The Husband. See? Anywhere. Everywhere.
3) HOW DID YOU GET PUBLISHED?
I've told that story in 2 parts, here and here. If you don't feel like reading that, I'll just say that it was in the traditional way (wrote book; queried agent; got agent; agent sold book), and that I knew ABSOLUTELY NO ONE in publishing beforehand.
4) WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ASPIRING WRITERS?
Read a lot. Write a lot. Dare to Suck. Don't become obsessed with Being Published. Tell stories you want to tell.
Okay, so HERE THERE BE SPOILERS!
Seriously, spoilers are coming. LOOK AWAY IF YOU HAVE NOT READ HEX HALL!!
HERE IT COMES!
I get a lot of email about Archer, and IS he really a bad guy. And to that I say...well, wait until Book 2. ;-) Archer is very much in Book 2, and yes, Dude Has Some 'Splainin' To Do. I WILL say that part of why I <3 Archer and like writing him with Sophie is that in a lot of ways, they're on a very similar path; both of them have been lied to, both of them have roles they're expected to fill, and both of them are struggling with Doing The Right Thing/Finding Themselves. All of this is a very round about way of saying...no, Archer is NOT a bad guy. But heck, to me, Alice isn't a villain. Elodie isn't a villain. Everyone is doing what they think is right. So...yeah. Morally ambiguous FTW!!
Okay, SPOILERS OVER NOW!
6) WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW?
Well, HEX HALL 2: LET'S TALK ABOUT HEX has been turned in to my editor, and is nearing the exciting Printed in Galleys stage. HEX HALL 3: TRIPLE HEXXX is on the agenda for this summer. In between, my beloved REBEL BELLE is floating out there in Publishing World, and I'm working on my Crazy YA Sci-Fi Romance of Wackiness. Also have a YA Fantasy Novel That Is Not Really Fantasy in the works, as well as a "spin-off' of the Hex Hall books. What can I say? I like working.
7) WILL THERE BE A HEX HALL MOVIE/TV SHOW?
I'm not in charge of that! I do have a film agent, the amazing Jon Cassir, and there have been "rumblings" in that general direction. I obviously have my fingers crossed, but the percentage of books that become movies is SO tiny that it's not like I have my heart set on it! It would be cool, though!
Okay, so that's it so far! Please let me know if there's anything else you'd like to know! Be hexcellent! :)
